If you knew your words were going to tremendously impact the life of the one who heard them;
If you knew without a doubt your audience was listening with attentive ears;
If you knew that your words would be remembered for a lifetime;
If you knew that your audience would live out the words that you speak to them;
If you knew that your words would be repeated to generations not only in the form of words but in actions;
If you knew that your words would be believed; would you consider your words carefully before you speak?
Would you pray over your words? Would you pause before speaking? Would you prepare?
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21
Everyday we are speaking life or death to those around us. For those of us who are parents, we are speaking life or death to our children.
The words of a parent have the most significant impact on the life of a child.
Our children are the audience listening to even our most idle word with attentive ears. They will remember our words for a lifetime and live out our words as a self fulfilling prophecy.
Our children believe what we say about the world, about life and about them. We have opportunity to speak life into their dreams, hopes and ambitions.
As parents we can, with our words, point our children to an almighty God who loves and cares for them. We can instill in them faith. We can help them discover their gifts and affirm and exhort them.
But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Matthew 12:36
How much more shall we have to give an account for our words spoken to those that we are entrusted with to nurture, teach and train?
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14
Let us speak life.
